Ammonia & methanol-to-power
e1 Marine
US joint venture supplying methanol-to-hydrogen generators and fuel-cell power systems for towboats, ports, yachts and workboats.
About e1 Marine
e1 Marine is a US company formed as a partnership of Element 1 Corporation of Bend, Oregon, Ardmore Shipping Corporation and Maritime Partners LLC. It markets Element 1's methanol-to-hydrogen technology to the maritime sector. Element 1 has developed hydrogen generators for about three decades.
The core technology is an onboard reformer that converts methanol and water into fuel-cell-grade hydrogen on demand, using a patented membrane purifier. This avoids storing compressed or liquid hydrogen on board. e1 Marine notes that methanol has about six times the energy density of compressed hydrogen and is easier to store and transport. Its product range includes the M-Series hydrogen generators (M18 to M30, about 10–16.2 kg of hydrogen per hour), which have Approval in Principle from Lloyd's Register, ABS and the Marshall Islands registry. Other products are the S-Series, the 140 kW e-Nomad and the containerised CPG clean power generator (up to 250 kW per unit, scalable to 3 MW). The company also offers the M2Power 250, which combines hydrogen generation with a PowerCell fuel cell.
With Maritime Partners, e1 Marine is developing the M/V Hydrogen One, described as the first methanol-to-hydrogen fuel cell towboat. Construction begins in 2026, and the design targets an 850-mile range. The company is also pursuing yacht and leisure projects.
