Van der Velden Marine Systems

Van der Velden Marine Systems is a Dutch specialist in high-performance rudders and steering gear for vessels where manoeuvrability is critical, with roots in Groningen. The business and its product lines are now part of Damen Marine Components (DMC), the marine equipment arm of the Damen group, which continues to use the Van der Velden and Barke brand names.

The rudder range includes the Barke flap rudder (a 45-degree rudder angle plus 55-degree flap angle for a combined 100 degrees), Master Fishtail rudders, flanking rudders for inland pusher tugs, XR and HD rudders, the Timon flap rudder, the Atlantic rudder, three-rudder systems and ESPAC energy-saving rudders. Steering systems such as the 2DWK and Van der Velden 4DWKK hydraulic steering gear for twin- and four-rudder inland vessels, plus SP2700 and HP7000 control and monitoring systems, complete the package.

Customers include inland shipping, short-sea cargo ships, dredgers, fishing and research vessels, tugs, offshore vessels, naval ships and superyachts. Recent Barke flap rudder deliveries include US-built trailing suction hopper dredgers and ocean-going ATBs.
