New Propeller Textbook from Westlawn
·By Posted by Michelle Howard
Westlawn Institute of Marine Technology, the not-for-profit educational affiliate of the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC), has incorporated a new textbook for Westlawn students that is pivotal to Westlawn’s Module 4 course. Propellers: Form Function, Selection, Speed & Powering and Problem Solving was penned by naval architect and Westlawn’s Director Dave Gerr.
Propellers incorporates the latest on propeller selection, sizing, and problem solving. It includes topics such as:
Blade characteristics
Engine power curves
Estimating boat speed
Propeller calculations for displacement and planing hulls
Propeller geometry
Propeller shaft standards
Propellers for variable thrust and high thrust
Special propeller considerations and problems
Theory behind the hull-speed constant.
“This new propeller textbook is part of Westlawn’s ongoing updates to the curriculum,” stated Gerr. “It is a process that never stops and is one of the reasons our courses are so comprehensive and our alumni are so successful.”
This is the second propeller book written by Gerr. He also wrote Propeller Handbook that was published by International Marine/McGraw-Hill in 1989 and has been used as the industry standard reference since then. Propellers incorporates Gerr’s latest research and conclusions on the subject, as a result of the last twenty five years of experience.
Additional updates on subjects such as aluminum hull structure, mechanical systems, and structural design will be released in the coming months. You must be a Westlawn student to purchase Propellers: Form Function, Selection, Speed & Powering and Problem Solving.
