BAE Systems Power & Propulsion Solutions

BAE Systems Power & Propulsion Solutions is the electric drive business of BAE Systems plc, based in Endicott, New York. The unit built its business on hybrid and electric drivetrains for transit buses and has adapted that technology for marine use. BAE Systems says it has more than 25 years of experience in electric propulsion and over 14,000 power and propulsion systems deployed worldwide.

Its marine offering is the HybriGen Power and Propulsion system, a modular series-hybrid and battery-electric architecture comprising electric propulsion motors and generators, the Modular Power Control System (MPCS) and the Modular Accessory Power System (MAPS). The next-generation HybriGen system was launched in November 2021 with smaller and lighter components intended to increase propulsion power and electrical efficiency and to extend vessel range. BAE Systems positions it for vessels from sailboats and tugs to passenger ferries, and the system is used on ferries, harbor craft and tour boats in the United States.

Manufacturing of the marine system takes place at the Endicott facility. The company promotes HybriGen as a route for operators toward zero-emission operation, with configurations that can run on batteries alone or combine batteries with an engine-driven generator.
