About Ballard Power Systems
Ballard Power Systems is a Canadian developer and manufacturer of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell products, headquartered in Burnaby, British Columbia. It serves heavy-duty mobility markets (bus, truck, rail and marine) as well as stationary power generation.
Its marine product is FCwave, a 200 kW PEM fuel cell module that can be combined into systems of about 200 kW to 1.2 MW and beyond. Ballard describes FCwave as the first type-approved fuel cell module in operational service, with type approval from DNV for the marine environment. The module can run on hydrogen stored as compressed gas or as liquid.
FCwave powers Norled's MF Hydra in Norway, which entered service in 2023 and which Ballard describes as the world's first liquid-hydrogen-powered passenger ferry. Ballard reports involvement in about ten ship projects. In 2025 it received an order for 6.4 MW of FCwave modules for Samskip's hydrogen-powered container vessels. Ballard has continued its marine activities through a period of corporate restructuring.
