BAR Technologies

BAR Technologies is a marine engineering company based in Portsmouth, UK, specialising in simulation-driven design, fluid dynamics and composites. Its team of fluid dynamicists, naval architects and control engineers works on decarbonisation solutions for commercial shipping, work boats and leisure craft.

In wind-assisted propulsion, the company designs and licenses WindWings, a patented three-element rigid wing sail. The original 37.5 m WindWings (750 m2 wing area) is aimed at vessels above 40,000 dwt, while the 20-24 m WindWings launched for smaller ships have 200-240 m2 of wing area and electrically driven systems. The first installation was on the Cargill-chartered bulker Pyxis Ocean in 2023, followed by vessels including Berge Olympus and Union Maritime LR2 tankers. Manufacturing is carried out with partners including WindWaves, and in 2026 BAR signed an MoU with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries on newbuild applications.

Other BAR product lines include AeroBridge aerodynamic solutions, hull optimisation, the FOSS foil-optimised stability system for workboats and e-foiling technology for leisure boats.
