Becker Marine Systems

Hamburg-based supplier of high-performance rudders, steering gear and energy-saving devices including the Becker Mewis Duct.

About Becker Marine Systems

Becker Marine Systems is a Hamburg, Germany-based supplier of manoeuvring systems and energy-saving devices for merchant and offshore ships. The company cites more than 75 years of experience and installations on more than 9,000 vessels.

Its manoeuvring range is built around high-performance rudders. The Becker Flap Rudder derives from founder Willi Becker's designs. The Twist Rudder uses a twisted profile to reduce cavitation, and the Schilling Rudder is a high-lift fishtail profile allowing rudder angles up to 70°. The range also includes fixed and steerable nozzles, rotary vane and cylinder-type steering gear, and the Becker Daggerboard, an anti-leeway fin for wind-assisted ships.

In energy-saving devices, the Becker Mewis Duct is a pre-swirl duct with integrated fins for slow, full-form ships such as tankers and bulk carriers. According to the company it is installed on more than 2,100 vessels, with savings of up to 10%. The Becker Twisted Fin targets faster, slimmer ships such as container vessels. Becker also offers monitoring systems (BIMS, BBMS) for rudder and bearing condition.
