Solid oxide fuel cells
Bloom Energy
US solid oxide fuel cell maker adapting its Energy Server platform for ships, with ABS type approval and a Samsung Heavy Industries partnership.
About Bloom Energy
Bloom Energy is a San Jose, California, manufacturer of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) power systems, best known for its stationary Bloom Energy Server, a modular 325 kW unit, and for its electrolyzers. Marine power is a smaller but growing part of its business.
Bloom has worked with Samsung Heavy Industries on SOFC-powered ship designs, including an LNG carrier concept in which fuel cells replace conventional engines for power generation. Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and Samsung Heavy Industries have announced plans to install a 300 kW Bloom SOFC system on a 174,000 m³ LNG carrier due for delivery in 2027. In 2025 Bloom reported ABS type approval for its marine fuel cells after a three-year process, covering applications such as cruise ships, LNG carriers and long-distance cargo ships.
The marine platform runs on natural gas from LNG as well as biogas and hydrogen blends of up to 50%, and Bloom says it is designed for future green hydrogen and carbon capture. The company quotes 53% electrical efficiency for its 65 kW marine power module, and up to 90% when waste heat is recovered.
