Candela

Candela is a Swedish developer and builder of electric hydrofoil vessels, founded in 2014 by Gustav Hasselskog and based in Stockholm. The company designs its boats, foil control system and propulsion in-house and says its hydrofoil technology cuts energy use by about 80% compared with conventional planing boats.

Its propulsion core is the C-POD, a sealed, seawater-cooled electric pod with two counter-rotating direct-drive propellers and no gearbox. The pod is used in Candela's own boats and, according to the input data, is also offered to other builders.

The professional range is built around the P-12, a 12 m foiling passenger shuttle for 30 passengers, offered as P-12 Shuttle, Voyager and Business. The P-12 uses two C-PODs, a 378 kWh battery and cruises at about 25 knots. The leisure range includes the C-8 day boat, which uses Polestar battery and charging technology, and the smaller C-7. Candela markets the P-12 to ferry operators and cities looking to replace diesel commuter boats.
