CORE POWER

CORE POWER is a UK-based company developing ship-based nuclear energy systems for commercial use. Its work has two strands: ship-shaped floating power plants that deliver continuous power to industry and coastal communities without large land-based infrastructure, and nuclear propulsion for commercial ships.

The company says its energy systems are based on Gen III+ reactors of around 300 MWe, while propulsion is aimed at Gen IV reactors sized for the ship and its speed. CORE POWER previously worked with TerraPower on the molten chloride fast reactor (MCFR) concept. It has also assessed BWXT's mPower SMR for floating nuclear power plants. In addition to the reactors, CORE POWER plans to build, integrate and deploy the vessels and supporting infrastructure.

Recent activity includes a US-anchored maritime nuclear programme launched in 2025 with a MARAD collaboration, and a 2026 study with the Port of Corpus Christi on preparing for nuclear-powered shipping. In September 2026 the company announced the ATLAS maritime nuclear framework, with the IAEA Director General taking part in the launch.
