GT Wings

GT Wings is a UK company developing wind-assisted propulsion for commercial shipping, founded by chief executive George Thompson and previously known as GT Green Technologies. Its product, the AirWing (marketed as the AirWing Jet Sail), is a rigid wing that uses powered airflow to generate high thrust from a small footprint, aimed at vessels where deck space or air draft rules out larger rotor or wing sails.

Development was supported by GBP 3.7 million from the UK Government's Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Round 4. A 20-metre demonstrator was installed on Carisbrooke Shipping's 120 m general cargo ship Vectis Progress, which sailed from Hull in March 2025 and has since operated on Atlantic crossings, the Great Lakes and the Caribbean. In February 2026 Lloyd's Register verified that GT Wings' performance assessment method is consistent with ISO 19030 and ITTC practice.

The company won its first commercial order from Grieg Maritime for the Star Kirkenes, with installation planned for late 2026 or early 2027. Target markets include bulk carriers, ro-ro ships and general cargo vessels.
