Hanwha Ocean

Hanwha Ocean is a South Korean shipbuilder and naval contractor headquartered in Geoje, part of the Hanwha Group. It builds LNG carriers, container ships, FPSOs and other offshore units, submarines and naval vessels, and offshore wind service vessels.

In marine propulsion, Hanwha Ocean develops its own fuel gas supply systems (FGSS) and fuel tank designs for gas-fuelled ships. In September 2026, ABS granted approval in principle at Gastech for its multi-purpose fuel tank and integrated FGSS, which allow an LNG carrier to switch from LNG to ammonia fuel without replacing tanks or supply systems; the design feeds either fuel to a gas turbine on an electrically propelled ship. This builds on an earlier ABS approval for an ammonia gas-turbine propulsion system (2023) and a gas dispersion study for a 174,000 m3 LNG carrier (2024).

Group company Hanwha Ocean Ecotech signed a strategic MoU with Alfa Laval in November 2025 on ammonia fuel system collaboration.
