HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE)

HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) is the shipbuilding intermediate holding company of South Korea's HD Hyundai group, headquartered in Seongnam. It oversees the group's shipyards, including HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and HD Hyundai Samho, and leads group-wide R&D in future ship technologies.

In marine propulsion, HD KSOE is one of the most active shipbuilders in civil nuclear propulsion research. In February 2025 it unveiled a 15,000 TEU class container ship design powered by small modular reactors, which received Approval in Principle from ABS. The concept uses a supercritical CO2 power cycle, developed with Baker Hughes, that HD KSOE says improves thermal efficiency by about 5% over conventional steam systems, and the company is researching next-generation SMRs with TerraPower. It plans to build a marine nuclear demonstration facility in Korea by 2030.

In March 2026 HD KSOE, HD Hyundai Samho and ABS began a joint development project on nuclear-powered electric propulsion for a 16,000 TEU container ship, covering basic design, electrical specifications and arrangement plans.
