IHI Corporation

IHI Corporation is a Japanese engineering and heavy-industry group, founded in 1853 and headquartered in Tokyo. It works in four business areas: resources, energy and environment; social infrastructure; industrial systems and general-purpose machinery; and aero engines, space and defence.

In marine propulsion, IHI is the Japanese licensee for General Electric's LM2500-series aeroderivative gas turbines. The two-shaft engines are derived from GE's TF39 and CF6-50 aircraft engines, and IHI manufactures and packages them for land and marine applications, including power generation, mechanical drive and ship propulsion. IHI-built LM2500 turbines power Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyers. For industrial power, IHI quotes simple-cycle outputs of about 21–22 MW for the LM2500PJ and about 32 MW for the LM2500RD.

IHI's gas turbine and engine work is carried out within the group, including IHI Power Systems. Alongside its GE licence work, IHI's aero-engine business takes part in commercial and defence engine programmes.
