Japanese industrial group supplying S6R/S12R/S16R high-speed marine diesels and gensets, and the MALS air lubrication system.
About Mitsubishi Heavy Industries
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) is a Japanese engineering group whose marine activities span engines, turbochargers, shipbuilding technology and energy-saving systems. Its engine business, run through MHI's Engine & Turbocharger domain and regional companies such as MHI Engine System Asia and Mitsubishi Turbochargers and Engines Europe, supplies high-speed marine diesel engines for propulsion and auxiliary power.
The marine engine line includes the S6R/S6R2 six-cylinder engines (about 605-759 kW), the S12R V12 (about 1,210-1,342 kW) and the S16R V16 (up to about 1,690 kW at 1,450-1,800 rpm), used in fishing vessels, tugs, inland and short-sea ships, ferries and workboats, plus S6B3-based auxiliary generator engines of about 367-448 kW.
Through its shipbuilding business (now Mitsubishi Shipbuilding), MHI developed the Mitsubishi Air Lubrication System (MALS), which blows a layer of air bubbles along the flat bottom of the hull to reduce frictional resistance. MALS was fitted to the module carriers Yamatai and Yamato in 2010 and to the ferry Naminoue in 2012, where more than 5% fuel savings were measured, and has been applied to cruise ships and in concept designs such as the MALS-14000CS container ship.
