Oceanbird

Oceanbird is a Swedish wind propulsion company, a joint venture between Alfa Laval and Wallenius Lines, based in Huddinge near Stockholm. It has around 38 employees and an assembly site, and says it moved from concept to product in three years.

Its product, the Wing 560, is a rigid wing sail standing 46 m from foundation to top, with a sail of about 40 by 14 m (around 560 m2). The mast and foundation are carbon steel and the flap and panels are glass-fibre composite; each wing weighs around 200 t and uses 6-10 kW in normal operation. The wing can be tilted and stowed hydraulically for port and bridge clearance, and is designed for a 25-year life. It targets PCTCs, bulkers and tankers over 200 m.

A Wing 560 was retrofitted on the Wallenius car carrier Tirranna as a first installation. In February 2026 Oceanbird announced its first commercial order, for two Wing 560 units to be retrofitted in Europe in early 2027.
