OceanWings

OceanWings is a French maker of wind-assisted propulsion systems, headquartered in Paris with a site in Caen. It was founded in 2018 as AYRO to commercialise rigid wingsail technology from VPLP Design, where co-founder Marc Van Peteghem developed the wingsail that won the 2010 America's Cup for BMW Oracle Racing. The company rebranded as OceanWings in 2024 as it widened its product range.

Its standard wingsail is an automated, reefable composite wing with a projected area of about 363 m², a span of 33 m and a chord of 11 m. It comes in four versions: OW RF (rigid fixed), OW RT (rigid tiltable), OW RE (rigid elevator) and OW LF (lowerable fixed), for RoRo ships, container ships, bulk carriers, tankers, cruise ships and yachts. OceanWings quotes average fuel savings of about 1.3 tonnes per day per wingsail and a payback of five years or less, depending on fuel type.

The first commercial installation was four wingsails on Canopée, a 121 m hybrid cargo ship that carries Ariane 6 rocket components for Alizé, a joint venture of Zéphyr & Borée and Jifmar. Later projects include Maria Topic, a container ship, a Kamsarmax bulk carrier and MR tankers. By 2026 OceanWings held approvals in principle from DNV, ClassNK, Bureau Veritas and ABS, plus a DNV type approval design certificate.
