Shift Clean Energy

Shift Clean Energy is a Canadian marine battery company headquartered in Vancouver. Yinson Holdings, through Yinson GreenTech, is a major investor. The company develops energy storage for electric and hybrid vessels and for industrial and port applications.

Shift says it developed the world's first liquid-cooled battery module in 2015. It also says its batteries powered the ferry Aurora, described as the world's largest electric ship in 2018, and that it was the first to pass a cell nail-penetration safety test in 2020. It rebranded as Shift and launched PwrSwäp in 2021. Its fixed battery systems are built from stackable modules of 6.6–9.1 kWh at 77–100 VDC, rated IP67, with cycle lives of 13,000–15,000 cycles. Cells can be replaced on board ('Cellswäp'). Safety monitoring software analyses battery performance across the fleet.

PwrSwäp is a pay-as-you-go energy subscription. Vessels exchange depleted ePod battery cartridges for charged ones at automated stations, so the energy storage is sized per trip rather than for the life of the vessel. A distributor reports that about 700 Shift systems are deployed in 17 countries. The company serves ferries, tugs, ports and offshore wind vessels.
