WEKA Marine

WEKA Marine, formerly WEKA Boxcoolers B.V., is a Dutch maker of closed-circuit cooling systems for ships. It is based in Krimpen aan den IJssel, near Rotterdam. The company dates from 1957 and has delivered more than 200,000 boxcoolers. Its units cool propulsion and auxiliary engines, generator sets, reduction gears, bow thrusters, air-conditioning and hydraulic systems on inland and seagoing vessels.

A WEKA box cooler is a U-tube bundle fitted in a sea chest in the ship's side, which saves space in the engine room. Tubes come in 90/10 copper-nickel, 70/30 copper-nickel or coated aluminium brass. The uncoated 90/10 CuNi version needs no ICAF anti-fouling system and is protected by the WEKA Guard and WEKA Protector devices. WEKA also makes coated and galvanised steel coolers for marine, industrial and stationary use. It sells Fernstrum GRIDCOOLER keel coolers and Omega laser plate heat exchangers, and it offers ultrasonic anti-fouling equipment.

In April 2014 WEKA was bought by Dunlap & McCullough Holdings LLC, owned by Paul, Sean and Todd Fernstrum, who also own R.W. Fernstrum & Company in the US. Fernstrum had built and distributed WEKA boxcoolers for the Americas since 2001. The two companies remain independent, with Sean Fernstrum as WEKA's managing director at the time of the deal. Markets include tugs, fishing vessels, barges, dredgers, ferries, cargo ships, tankers, offshore vessels and icebreakers.
