Project 22220 (Arktika class) nuclear icebreakers
Twin RITM-200 reactor, ~60 MW universal icebreakers operated by Atomflot on the Northern Sea Route; four in service, three more under construction.
The Project 22220 universal icebreakers are the largest and most powerful icebreakers in service. Each ship carries two RITM-200 pressurised water reactors of 175 MWt each, feeding a nuclear-electric plant with about 60 MW (80,000 hp) of propulsion power. The ships can break 2.8 m of level ice continuously at 1.5-2 knots and use variable draught to work in both deep Arctic waters and river estuaries. Arktika (2020), Sibir (2021), Ural (2022) and Yakutiya (2025) are in service; Chukotka, Leningrad and Stalingrad are due between 2027 and 2030.
