Schneekluth Wake Equalizing Duct (WED)
Pair of foil-profiled half-ring ducts ahead of the propeller that even out inflow; the company claims up to 12% fuel and 50% vibration reduction.
The WED consists of two half-ring ducts with an airfoil profile, fitted to the hull on either side ahead of the propeller, plus spoiler plates. Water enters the larger forward opening and is accelerated and directed more evenly into the upper part of the propeller disc, reducing flow irregularities that cause pressure pulses. Schneekluth claims fuel savings of up to 12%, vibration reduction of up to 50% and no maintenance costs. About 3,000 bulk carriers, tankers, container and multipurpose ships have been fitted.
