About Berg Propulsion
Berg Propulsion is a Swedish marine propulsion specialist headquartered in Hönö, near Gothenburg. It designs and supplies complete propulsion packages built around controllable-pitch and fixed-pitch propellers, azimuth thrusters (Z-drive and L-drive, FP or CP), tunnel thrusters and its own MPC800 integrated propulsion control system. The company offers fuel-mechanical, fuel-electric, battery-electric, hybrid, direct-drive electric and twin-fin configurations, plus fuel-saving controls and sail-assist integration.
Its markets include general cargo ships and product tankers, fishing vessels, tugs, ferries, offshore vessels and yachts, supported by a global lifecycle service business covering retrofits, spares, overhaul, crew training and service agreements.
Berg was owned by Caterpillar between 2013/2014 and 2020, trading as Caterpillar Propulsion, before a management buyout returned the business to its original name. In July 2026 Kongsberg Maritime agreed to acquire Berg Propulsion (reported revenue of about EUR 160 million in 2025); the transaction is pending approval and Berg is to remain a separate brand within Kongsberg.
