About Fairbanks Morse Defense
Fairbanks Morse Defense (FMD) is a US supplier of engines, motors and propulsion equipment for the US Navy, US Coast Guard and other government customers, headquartered in Beloit, Wisconsin, and owned by Arcline Investment Management. The company says it has built US-made medium-speed engines to military standards for more than 80 years.
FMD's engine range is largely licence-built from Everllence and Pielstick designs: the FM 32/44 CR (3,600-12,000 kW), FM 48/60 CR (7,200-19,200 kW), FM 28/33D STC, FM PA6B STC and PC2.5 STC, plus the high-speed FM 175D selected for US Navy programmes. It also supports its own legacy FM Opposed Piston 38D 8-1/8 and the FM ALCO 251F.
Under Arcline, FMD has expanded through acquisitions. It offers Ward Leonard MIL-spec motors for surface ships and submarines, and in July 2026 closed the acquisition of Rolls-Royce's naval propulsors and handling business, adding controllable- and fixed-pitch propellers, davits and handling systems. In August 2026 it broke ground on a davit manufacturing facility in Poland.
