Leonardo DRS

Leonardo DRS is a US defence technology company headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, listed on Nasdaq and majority-owned by Italy's Leonardo S.p.A. Founded in 1969, it reported 2025 revenue of USD 3.6 billion and about 7,300 employees.

Its naval power and propulsion business supplies power distribution, conversion, propulsion and energy storage for US and allied surface ships and submarines. Products include permanent magnet propulsion motors, integrated electric drive and hybrid electric drive systems, variable frequency drives, motor controllers, switchboards, circuit breakers, power electronic modules and the Energy Magazine storage system.

Leonardo DRS is the main supplier of the electric drive propulsion system for the US Navy's Columbia-class ballistic missile submarines, with contracts worth over USD 3 billion; it shipped the first production main propulsion motor to General Dynamics Electric Boat in 2022, with work at Fitchburg (Massachusetts), Milwaukee (Wisconsin) and Danbury (Connecticut). It also supplies hybrid electric drive for the Republic of Korea Navy's Ulsan-class frigates, the PA44 motor for the US Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Cutter and electric propulsion for Korea's KDDX destroyer programme.
