Leonardo DRS builds permanent magnet propulsion motors with high efficiency and power density. Its integrated electric drive (IED) motor is rated 36.5 MW (50,000 hp), weighs about 125 tons and delivers over 2 million ft-lb of torque. The company supplies the main propulsion motor and other major components of the Columbia-class submarine electric drive; the first production motor shipped in 2022.
