Hybrid electric drive (HED) motors
Gear- and shaft-mounted HED motors of 1.5-1.7 MW and the 625 hp PA44, used on Ulsan-class frigates and USCG OPC.
Leonardo DRS hybrid electric drive systems add electric motors to conventional mechanical propulsion for efficient low-speed operation. Motors include a 1.7 MW shaft-mounted and a 1.5 MW gear-mounted unit, and the water-cooled PA44 (625 hp) selected for the US Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Cutter. HED completed sea trials on the first Republic of Korea Navy Ulsan-class frigate.
