About Mitsui E&S
Mitsui E&S is a Tokyo-based engineering group and Japan's largest builder of large low-speed two-stroke marine engines, claiming about 75% of the domestic market. It has built B&W engines under licence since 1926 at its Tamano works, now marketed as MITSUI-Everllence B&W engines, and passed 120 million horsepower of cumulative production in November 2024.
In 2023 it took over IHI's Diesel United, now Mitsui E&S DU, adding WinGD (ex-Sulzer) two-stroke engines, built since 1950, and S.E.M.T. Pielstick four-stroke engines, built since 1965. WinGD has since also added the Tamano factory to its Japanese licensee network. Makita Corporation is a sub-licensee.
Mitsui E&S has shifted its focus from heavy-fuel engines to dual-fuel designs. It says it built the world's first methanol dual-fuel (ME-LGIM) and ethane dual-fuel (ME-GIE) engines and its first LPG dual-fuel engine (ME-LGIP) in 2022, and it cleared Japan's first WinGD methanol engine. Ammonia and hydrogen dual-fuel engines are under development. The company also supplies LNG pumps, BOG compressors, ammonia fuel supply systems, engine controllers and after-sales service as integrated propulsion packages.
