About Samsung Heavy Industries
Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) is one of South Korea's largest shipbuilders, part of the Samsung Group, headquartered in Seongnam. It builds LNG carriers, container ships, tankers and offshore units and develops smart, autonomous and environmental technologies for carbon-neutral shipping.
SHI develops several propulsion-related technologies in-house. Its S-Fugas fuel gas supply system serves LNG-fuelled newbuilds, and its SAVER Air air lubrication system, which injects air under the hull to reduce frictional resistance, is fitted mainly to SHI-built LNG carriers, container ships and tankers.
In nuclear propulsion, SHI works with the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) and KRISO on marine molten salt reactors. In July 2026 ABS granted Approval in Principle for a 15,000 TEU Neopanamax container ship powered by two molten-salt small modular reactors and designed for 25 knots, following earlier class approvals for a nuclear-powered LNG carrier concept.
