Smart Green Shipping

Smart Green Shipping (SGS) is a UK wind-propulsion developer headquartered in Glasgow, Scotland, which describes itself as a collaborative systems-design house. Its main product is FastRig, a lightweight, autonomous rigid wingsail that can be stowed and is designed to be retrofitted to existing bulk carriers and tankers without dry-docking or invasive structural changes. FastRig is manufactured in the UK from recyclable materials.

SGS pairs the hardware with FastRoute, weather-routing software that plans voyages to make the most of wind power. It also offers FastReport, a consultancy for feasibility and cost-benefit studies, and FastReach, a leasing model that includes performance guarantees and maintenance.

A FastRig demonstrator was installed on the nuclear-fuel carrier MV Pacific Grebe with sponsorship from Drax Group and support from the UK Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition. Installation and removal were completed dockside within eight weeks. Sea trials in late 2024, reported in 2025, validated the FastRig and FastRoute performance models, with independent verification by the University of Southampton and Houlder. SGS says the system can save up to 40% of fuel and emissions per year. In 2025 it announced what it calls finance-grade performance guarantees for FastRig.
