Toyota Motor Corporation, headquartered in Toyota City, Japan, is one of the world's largest vehicle manufacturers and a pioneer of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles with the Mirai. It has sold about 28,000 Mirai cars since 2014 and, since 2019, has supplied more than 2,700 fuel cell systems for commercial applications worldwide.

In marine propulsion Toyota acts as a component supplier. In February 2020 Toyota's European technical centre developed, in seven months, a compact marine fuel cell module from Mirai components for the hydrogen vessel Energy Observer. Toyota's packaged fuel cell modules (about 60-80 kW each in the second generation) are supplied to marine integrators such as Corvus Energy and EODev, which build them into systems for small craft, ferries and workboats.

In February 2025 Toyota announced its third-generation fuel cell system, aimed at passenger cars, heavy commercial vehicles, stationary power, rail and ships. Toyota says it doubles durability to a level comparable with diesel engines, improves fuel efficiency by about 20% in cruising range and lowers cost; market introduction is planned from 2026 in Japan, Europe, North America and China.
