Engine designers & licensors
Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG)
Akashi-based designer, licensor and builder of Mitsubishi UE low-speed engines, including ammonia and hydrogen dual-fuel models.
About Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG)
Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG) is the only Japanese designer and licensor of large low-speed two-stroke marine engines, headquartered in Akashi, Hyogo prefecture. The company is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (6016), with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries as its largest shareholder, and covers product development and design, manufacturing, sales and after-sales service of the UE engine, one of the world's three low-speed engine brands. Licensees include Akasaka Diesels, Guangzhou Diesel Engine Factory and Zhejiang Yungpu Diesel Engine.
The UE programme spans bores from 33 to 80 cm in the LSE, LSH and LSJ series; the LSH focuses on low fuel consumption with conventional fuels and EGR, while the LSJ adds stratified water injection. J-ENG is developing zero-carbon engines: its first full-scale commercial ammonia engine, the 7UEC50LSJA-HPSCR, completed testing in 2025 with over 90% GHG reduction at 95% ammonia co-firing and won Marine Engineering of the Year 2025. A 35 cm-bore hydrogen engine, the UEC35LSGH, is being developed through the HyENG joint venture with Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Yanmar Power Technology, and a methanol version (LSJM) is planned.
