About The Switch
The Switch is a Finnish supplier of permanent-magnet (PM) electric machines and power electronics for marine, wind power and industrial applications, headquartered in Helsinki. It sells to system integrators and OEMs rather than to shipowners directly and reports more than 24 GW of megawatt-class technology installed worldwide. The company was previously owned by Yaskawa Electric (trading as Yaskawa Environmental Energy / The Switch); since 2024 it has been part of the Japanese BEMAC Group.
In marine, The Switch offers PM machines that work as shaft generators on large low-speed two-stroke engines or as propulsion motors. The PMM range runs from the PMM850M (0.5-2 MW) to the PMM2000M (4-12 MW, for container ships). Its DC-Hub is a modular multi-megawatt DC power distribution system that connects generators, batteries, shore charging and propulsion drives, with semiconductor protection devices including an electronic DC breaker and a DNV-approved, DP3-rated electronic bus link.
Target vessels include container ships, bulk carriers, tankers, gas carriers, ferries and offshore vessels.
