Volvo Penta

Volvo Penta is the marine and industrial engine business of AB Volvo (Volvo Group), headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden. It supplies integrated power solutions for leisure boats, yachts, workboats, ferries and other commercial craft.

Its marine range includes the D-series inboard diesels (D4, D6, D8, D11, D13 and D16/D17), which can run on HVO. These are available with shafts or as IPS packages. The D11, for example, is a 10.8-litre in-line six-cylinder common-rail diesel. Volvo Penta developed IPS (Inboard Performance System), a pod drive with forward-facing twin propellers integrated with joystick control, Assisted Docking and the Dynamic Positioning System through its Electronic Vessel Control (EVC). For leisure boats it also makes Aquamatic sterndrives with DPS duoprop drives and a Forward Drive for wakesurf and tow boats. It acquired Seven Marine in 2017 and later dropped the Seven brand.

In electrification, Volvo Penta launched a full-electric IPS range in 2025, starting with the IPS900E (515 kW) and IPS650E (374 kW). Individual drivelines cover 220 kW to 1.1 MW, and quad installations reach up to 4.5 MW. A hybrid-electric IPS for yachts won Technical Development of the Year at the 2026 Motor Boat Awards.
