Kawasaki Heavy Industries

Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI), headquartered in Kobe, Japan, is a diversified heavy-industry group. Its marine machinery business supplies main engines, propulsors and thrusters, mainly to Japanese and Asian shipyards.

KHI builds B&W low-speed two-stroke engines under licence from Everllence. The range includes electronically controlled ME-C and ME-B engines and GI/LGI dual-fuel engines for gas and low-flashpoint fuels, which are used in LNG and LPG carriers, car carriers and container ships. It also offers its own K-ECOS emission control and K-GET waste-heat recovery systems. In 2024–25 KHI disclosed falsification of test data for its two-stroke engines. Hanshin Diesel is a sub-licensee.

KHI's propulsor range includes controllable-pitch propellers of about 1,000–50,000 kW, including the 11 m 2200P3, which was the world's largest when built. It has supplied Rexpeller azimuth thrusters of up to 6,500 kW since 1983, in L-drive and Z-drive, retractable, swing-up and underwater-mountable versions. Its side thrusters of up to 4,000 kW have been built since 1965, and production has passed 3,000 units. For the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, KHI packages Rolls-Royce marine gas turbines. For the 30FFM frigates it assembles the MT30 into a compact package enclosure and carries out integrated shore trials of the propulsion system.
