About ABB Marine & Ports
ABB Marine & Ports is the marine business of ABB Ltd, the Zurich-headquartered electrification and automation group. It supplies electric, automated and digital solutions for ships and ports, covering power generation and distribution, electric propulsion, vessel control and lifecycle service.
Its best-known product is Azipod, a gearless steerable electric propulsion system in which the electric motor is housed in a submerged pod. According to ABB, more than 800 Azipod units have been delivered, more than 350 vessels operate with Azipod propulsion, open-water units cover roughly 1–22 MW, and the system has been in service for over 35 years. Azipod is widely used on cruise ships, ferries, icebreakers and other ice-class vessels, offshore units and research ships.
Other product lines include Onboard DC Grid, which combines AC components with DC distribution to integrate gensets, batteries and drives, and ABB Ability Marine Pilot Control, a joystick-based manoeuvring and control system that forms part of ABB's AX Bridge platform and supports automation up to DP2 and autodocking. ABB also provides remote diagnostics, troubleshooting and on-call repair for its propulsion and electrical installations.
