Azipod is ABB's gearless steerable electric propulsion system, in which the electric motor sits inside a pod outside the hull and drives the propeller directly. ABB says open-water Azipod systems span about 1–22 MW, and it reports more than 800 units delivered to more than 350 vessels over 35-plus years of operation. The company attributes energy savings of up to 20% to the removal of mechanical transmission losses, along with 360° manoeuvrability and lower noise and vibration.
