About

Harbormaster Marine, Inc. (HMI) continues a line of marine propulsion engineering that began in 1885, when Murray & Tregurtha, Inc. was founded in the Boston, Massachusetts area to build steam powered marine propulsion systems. In 1940, at the request of the U.S. Navy, the firm developed a self contained 360 degree steerable outboard drive that was used widely on self-propelled barges during World War II.

Murray & Tregurtha became affiliated with Mathewson Machine Works of Quincy, Massachusetts in 1942, began building tunnel thrusters with Kaplan type propellers in 1946 and registered the Harbormaster trademark in 1947. In 1964 Harbormaster built the first through-hull 360 degree azimuth thrusters for tug boats.

In 1990 Harbormaster Marine, Inc. of Livonia, Michigan acquired the assets of the Harbormaster Division of Mathewson Corporation. The contact address is now in Canton, Michigan, and the company keeps a spare parts inventory and service staff for all Murray & Tregurtha and Harbormaster units.
