Pentair was founded in 1966 in suburban St. Paul, Minnesota, by five men who planned to manufacture high-altitude balloons; the name combines the Greek penta for the five founders with air. The company diversified quickly and later focused its portfolio on water.
Today Pentair has approximately 9,000 employees and works in three areas: Pentair Flow (move water), Pentair Water Solutions (improve water) and Pentair Pool (enjoy water).
