Piranha Propellers is based at 250 Scottsville Blvd in Jackson, California, USA. The company was formed in February 1989 by two brothers, Brad Stahl and Eric Jochim. Brad Stahl, an aeronautical engineer, saw a use for a composite he was working with on drone propellers, while Eric Jochim, a civil engineer, was spending too much time and money on damaged boat propellers.

The first parts were developed in April 1989 and the propeller system was ready for the market by September of that year.

The propeller is an American-made product: design, tooling and manufacturing are all performed in Jackson, California. The aluminum extrusion comes from Southern California and the high-strength composites are manufactured in Winona, Minnesota.
